AI Is the Launchpad. Your Kid Is the Rocket.
What if artificial intelligence could actually help get kids away from screens?
That may sound a little strange coming from a technology professor.
It may even sound a bit like recommending a trip to Hershey Park as a way to cut back on chocolate.
But hear me out.
We spend a lot of time talking about how AI might keep children glued to technology. That is a fair concern. But I think there is another way to look at it.
What if AI did not have to be the final destination?
What if ten seconds with AI could lead to an hour of building, running, laughing, imagining, exploring, or making a glorious mess?
In this episode of Mr. Fred’s Tech Talks, I look at three simple ways parents, grandparents, and teachers can use AI as a starting point for real-world creativity and play.
The big question is not simply:
Did the child use AI?
A better question may be:
What happened next?
Did AI Start the Experience or Replace It?
In the previous episode, The AI School Supply List, I talked about three skills students increasingly need in an AI-powered world:
- Digital confidence
- Healthy skepticism
- Good judgment
I also suggested that instead of asking only whether a student used AI, we should ask whether using AI left that student understanding more than when they started.
I think we can apply that same question outside the classroom.
If AI creates a song, picture, story, activity, or idea, what does the child do with it?
Do they simply consume what the technology produces?
Or does it cause them to:
- Build something
- Draw something
- Move
- Ask questions
- Make decisions
- Solve a problem
- Work with someone else
- Change the original idea
- Create something the AI never predicted
That difference matters.
Technology can be incredibly useful, but it is also very good at keeping all of us sitting there asking for the next thing.
And yes, adults are guilty too.
You can pick up your phone to check tomorrow’s weather and somehow emerge 27 minutes later knowing what an actor from a television show you watched in 1987 had for lunch.
It happens.
The goal is not to eliminate technology.
The goal is to help kids use it as a tool that leads somewhere.
Idea #1: AI Makes the Demo. Your Child Becomes the Band.
Start with something ridiculous.
Ask your child to choose a few unrelated things:
- A favorite food
- An animal
- A strange character
- A musical style
Maybe you end up creating a country song about a grumpy grandpa who loves broccoli and watches a goldfish all afternoon.
For the record, I am a grandfather, and I do like broccoli.
I am not admitting to anything else.
Use an AI music tool to create the song.
Then comes the important part.
Do not let listening to the song become the entire activity.
Grab a wooden spoon, an empty container, a toy instrument, or anything else that has a reasonable chance of surviving the performance.
Sing along.
Invent new lyrics.
Create a dance.
Recruit family members.
Take the performance outside.
At that point, AI is no longer the main attraction.
It created the demo.
Your child became the band.
Idea #2: AI Creates the Reference. Your Child Becomes the Maker.
Ask your child to imagine something that does not exist.
Maybe it is:
- A cat with dragon wings
- A robot made of clouds
- A creature that lives underground
- A planet made entirely of pizza
I still have questions about the structural integrity of that pizza crust.
Ask your child to describe the idea.
What color is it?
Where does it live?
What special ability does it have?
What does it eat?
Then use an AI image generator to create a picture.
Now take a screenshot and close the generator.
Hand over:
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Markers
- Building blocks
- Tape
- Recycled materials
- Whatever happens to be nearby
And ask the child to build it.
It does not have to look like the AI version.
In fact, it probably should not.
The AI image is simply the reference point.
The child now has to make decisions about materials, construction, balance, design, and what to do when one of the wings inevitably falls off.
That is not failure.
That is engineering.
AI created the reference.
Your child became the maker.
Idea #3: AI Creates the List. Your Family Lives the Adventure.
Every parent knows the phrase:
“I’m bored.”
After raising three kids, those words still have a special place in my memory.
They can turn a perfectly peaceful Saturday afternoon into a very long hostage negotiation.
When I was growing up, my mother’s response was usually something like:
“Go outside.”
So we did.
Often there was no plan.
Eventually somebody found a ball.
Someone started digging.
A friend showed up.
A fort appeared.
Something happened.
I do not think a little boredom is necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes boredom creates enough empty space for imagination to start working.
But AI can help get past that first:
“I don’t know what to do.”
Try something like:
Give me ten fun backyard adventures for a Saturday afternoon for a 10-year-old. Make them creative, inexpensive, and possible using things we probably already have at home.
Read through the ideas together.
Let your child choose one.
Then stop planning.
Gather what you need.
Put on your shoes.
Go outside.
The screen has completed its assignment.
What happens next belongs to your family.
AI created the list.
Your family lived the adventure.
The “What Happened Next?” Test
This may be one of the easiest ways for parents and teachers to think about AI use without needing a giant rulebook.
After the AI interaction, ask:
What happened next?
Did the child:
- Make a choice?
- Explain an idea?
- Move?
- Build?
- Draw?
- Revise something?
- Work with another person?
- Solve a problem?
- Take the activity somewhere unexpected?
If the answer is yes, AI may have done exactly what we wanted it to do.
It provided a spark.
If the child simply accepted the output and immediately asked AI to make another one, then the technology may have become the entire experience.
Not every AI interaction needs to turn into a three-hour family STEM project.
Parents are busy.
Teachers are busy.
Families are busy.
This is less about creating another set of rules and more about noticing the pattern.
Is AI helping kids become active creators, or is it making passive consumption even easier?
That is a question worth asking.
This Week’s Tech Challenge
Try this with your child, grandchild, or even your entire family.
Enter this prompt into an AI tool:
Create five funny family missions we can complete outside in 30 minutes. Use inexpensive items we probably already have. Each mission should require movement, imagination, or building something. Do not make the activity depend on using a screen.
Then:
- Let the child choose the mission.
- Gather what you need.
- Close the device.
- Go do it.
And try not to spend the next 45 minutes improving the AI-generated plan.
If your child changes the rules, creates a new character, adds another challenge, or completely ignores the AI suggestion and invents something better…
Excellent.
That probably means the experiment worked.
AI Should Be the Beginning, Not the End
AI is going to become part of childhood, school, work, and family life.
We can pretend it is not there.
We can hand over the controls completely.
Or we can help young people learn how to use it as a tool.
I prefer that third option.
Let AI suggest the song.
Let the child perform it.
Let AI draw the creature.
Let the child build it.
Let AI suggest the adventure.
Then close the screen and go live it.
The output should be the beginning, not the end.
AI can provide the spark.
The interesting part is what happens after the screen is closed.
AI is the launchpad. Your kid is the rocket.
